Jongmyo is not a residential palace. It is a shrine for ancestral tablets of Joseon kings and queens and of Korea’s emperors and empresses. Its spaces served dynastic remembrance through ritual rather than the royal family’s everyday life. The columns and long roofline should therefore be understood together with that purpose.
Founded in 1395, the complex was rebuilt in 1608 according to the official chronology. Subsequent extensions explain the scale of its main halls, Jeongjeon and Yeongnyeongjeon. The buildings are not an untouched survival from the foundation year. UNESCO placed the shrine on the World Heritage List in 1995.
The main ritual spaces depended on practical facilities. Kings and crown princes prepared in Jaegung; Hyangdaecheong stored incense and written prayers; Jeonsacheong was used to prepare ritual food. Ceremony required rooms, objects and work as well as an impressive façade.
UNESCO describes the site’s connection with rites encompassing music, song and dance. A recording lets us hear part of this history, but needs its own identification: performance date, participants and type of presentation. An upload date is not necessarily the date of the rite. Combining the spatial plan with a documented performance gives a fuller account of dynastic remembrance.
